Gig Cancellation Distresses fans

Distressed Perico fans were being comforted over the weekend after the last-minute cancellation of Perico's gig at the Brunswick South Primary School Fete. Perico had been scheduled to perform at 8pm but with the stage running badly behind time, and the finishing time of 9pm rapidly approaching, Perico voluntarily pulled out for the 'greater good'.

Perico singer, guitarist and moustached philanthropist, Richard Oldfield, issued a formal apology to fans while at the Retreat front bar on Saturday afternoon. Unfortunately, local band Darkest Heartstrings were so loud that nobody actually heard him.

Excitement Mounts Over New Kit Debut

Perico drummer Col was reportedly drooling over the prospect of debuting his spanking new Pearl drum kit at tonight's twilight fete.
"Yeah, I've had to replace my shirt three times already today as I'm continually dribbling all over it." he said.
You can catch Col's new drum kit tonight at the Brunswick South Primary School Fete, Brunswick Road, Brunswick at 8pm.

Riots in Sydney Road as Fans Protest "Rigged" vote

Sydney Road was alive today as hundreds took to the streets in the worst riots seen since the infamous "baby milk" protests of 2005.

The riots began at around 8am as word filtered out that Brunswick supergroup Perico had been denied this week's Golden Parrot, despite being clearly the best band on in Brunswick this weekend.

What started as a peaceful protest soon got out of hand when an unknown provocateur, who looked suspiciously like well-known state election candidate and Brunswick drinker, Damo Wilding, started a chant that went something like "Golden Parrot for the best gigs, lets go fight the pigs."

Innocent bystander and shopkeeper Andy Butcher told pericoloco:
"I can understand their anger, I mean the vote must've been rigged. But couldn't they smash up Fitzroy or Northcote instead?"

This Weekend's Brunswick Music Guide

There's lots of choices this weekend, and it's expected that all readers of this blog will be out in full force to see Perico for possibly the last time in their current form, but certainly the last time until "The Christmas Show". Perico come on at about 8pm, but the fete is worth checking out anyway from 3:30pm onwards.

Saturday afternoon's Retreat line-up features the loud and proud Lonely Hearts at 5pm before the T-Bones and the Ambassadors of this Olde School round out a solid early evening.

It's Sunday that really prooves why Brunswick really is Australia's music capital and why people like Andrew Bolt should spend more time here. (Actually, on second thoughts, he shouldn't ever be allowed to even enter the post code without prior permission). The Nuclear Free Benefit at the Cornish should be a blast, but it's not free. For free stuff, head to the Brunswick Hotel just because they've come up with the name "Whole Gamut Accoustic Club". What extra things do you put into an accoustic evening to make it the whole gamut, rather than just a part gamut or normal accoustic club? Do you add amplifiers, drums and a 6-piece wind section?

Meanwhile, the Retreat just keeps pulling us back and that dammed Golden Parrot is proving impossible to unbolt. So Susannah Espie on Sunday night gets the nod for this week's trophy.

Bolt Calls For Perico to Become Assimilated

Highly respected and well-loved Herald-Sun Columnist, Andrew Bolt, has put out a thinly-veiled request for Perico to assimilate and be like every other band.

Writing in his usual column on Wednesday, Bolt said:

THE weird news this past month tells us enough is enough.
These people, so many shrouded in black and living in enclaves like Brunswick, must now become assimilated.

Perico have denied that the reference was to them as they are rarely seen in black nowadays, but state election candidate and Brunswick drinker, Damo Wilding, agreed with Bolt.

"Brunswick IS an enclave" he told pericoloco "and Perico DO have a responsibility to be like evryone else. That's what tolerance is all about."

This (long) weekend in the Wick

A four day gig guide this week given that should test the staunchest Wicker. The Vasco Era come to the East on Saturday night and have to be a serious contender for the Golden parrot this week as does Yanto Shortis who appears the Retreat on Sunday arvo. But then there's something particularly special about going out drinking and watching bands on a Monday night and pericoloco encourages this. Down a dozen pots at the Brunswick on Monday night and catch Dalys Hill and the Ben Smith Band for free.

Those of you disappearing for a few days over the really long weekend (how do so many people manage to get Monday off work?), make sure you're back on Cup Day. Brunswick's Music this Weekend

The Perico fan-base grew by 1 this week, with good news from London and to celebrate, Richo will be performing some Perico songs at a Brunswick creche fete on Sunday arvo. This should get him prepared for the Primary School fete in 2 weeks, and means that Perico only need a high school gig to complete the trifecta.

Meanwhile, the Cornish Hotel is back in traditional Brunswickesque style with this week's Golden Parrot on Friday night to the double bill of The Love Slaps and The Crack Whores for a measly $5. The Detonators play there on saturday night, also for $5, which is another Wick fave. Good luck to the Cornish if this is the way they're heading in the future. We hope that pericoloco readers support them.

Perico Deny that Children is their Fete

Perico announced today that they would perform at twilight at the appropriately named "Twilight Fete" at the Brunswick South Primary Schoool.
"This is not a new direction for the band." said fertile bassist Greg. "In fact it's probable that the audience will actually be older than what's normal at our gigs."
"It's part of our commitment to return things to the community " added Richard 'Gandhi' Oldfield, "and it doesn't really represent what we necessarily think is cool."
Perico drummer and intellectual Col was up beat, which is generally better than being off-beat.
"They sell beer at the fete. Yes, I'll say it again. THEY SELL BEER."
Brunswick South Primary School Twilight Fete runs from 3:30pm on Friday 10th of November. The school is located on Brunswick Road, between Lygon St and Nicholson St. Perico will begin playing at about 8:30pm.

Brunswick Hottest Gigs this Weekend

Once again Brunswick has produced an absolute ripper for all you music-loving Wicksters, We'd like to reccomend the 10-piece band "The Conch" who play the Noise Bar allegeedly at 3pm, except i think we're still a bit pissed off about them playing 'til 6:15pm when Perico were supposed to start at 4pm, then 5pm, then 5:30pm ....
Anyway, if Pericoist Col wasn't captaining the mighty Abbotsford Anglers on Saturday arvo he'd definately be catching up with Rory Ellis and Dave Steel at the Retreat at 5pm instead. By night time, he'd head down to the the re-invigorated "Vic" where heavy rockers Darkest Heartstrings fill out a big night with Kids in Cults, The Sound Debate and the appropriately named Bang Bang Bangs.

On Sunday, between tunes being spun by Dallas Crane drummer and fellow Abbotsford Angler DJ Shannon, pericolocists will all be heading to the Brunswick Hotel to catch this week's
Golden Parrot winning line-up of
Chantelle Rogers, Krit, Taboo and A Million Bright Ambassadors of Morning. It's free and starts about 5pm.

Thank God there's Brunswick

Who needs the Myer Music Bowl when you've got 13 venues in Brunswick and Brunswick East that regularly put on live music? This week we welcome CERES, the environmental park on Merri Creek, to the pericoloco world as our 13th Brunswick venue. When it will end? Would it be possible to see live music at EVERY venue in one weekend? Pericoloco sets the challenge and will handsomely reward any serious takers.

Meanwhile, this week's Golden Parrot is naturally enough heading to the Railway Hotel/Noise Bar on Saturday arvo when The Conch come on at 3pm before Brunswick superstars Perico take the stage around 4.30-5.00pm for a couple of sets. If you're still feeling good (and who wouldn't be after a Perico gig?) you can hang around for more free music at the Noise Bar or catch up with the Perico boys at the beer garden at the Retreat for lots of jolly post-gig deconstruction conversation.

Perico Deny Wild Party Links

Perico management have been forced to distance themselves from reports that Brunswick drinker and political activist Damo Wilding will be running as a candidate in the upcoming state election.

Wilding, of Brunswick, is believed to have established the Wild Party, a shady group of men in their mid 30's with questionable motives, and is currently seeking candidates to run in a string of lower house seats in Melbourne's northern suburbs.

Perico were quick to distance themselves from the man who suspiciously has been seen at far too many of their gigs to be trusted.

"We do not endorse Damo Wilding or anyone else's candidature" Perico said in a written statement, "but particularly we don't endorse Damo Wilding. "

Perico Rock Out Moon Lantern Festival

Sunday's gig in front of a huge crowd marked a critical turning point for Perico.

According to band spokesperson Drummer Queen Col, demand for live performances and copies of cds is sure to "skyrocket."

"I mean the crowd was pumped" he told pericoloco. "We could hardly hear ourselves because of the screaming."

Click here for another photo of Sunday's gig.

This Weekend's Gigs

In a weekend dominated by Perico's performance on Sunday arvo at the Moon Lantern Festival, pericoloco was still able to pull a few gems from the world's premier suburb for live music. It could be a good time to get down to the East this weekend, with CD launches happening every night and Sunday evening's Sleeping Pilot plus Yanto a beauty. But this week's Golden Parrot crosses the railway line and heads to the Vic Hotel (welcome back), where the Livingstone brothers strut their stuff, in Cutty Sark, headlining a 3-band evening.
