This Weekend in the Wick

You gotta love Brunswick. Every week there's great music and half the time there's no cover charge. The Retreat andthe Brunswick are regulars in this regard, but this weekend Plan B, Noise Bar, The Cornish Arms all offer free gigs and the East is only charging $8 on Saturday night. Add to this our first listings for the former Big House, now known as Don't Tell Tom and you understand why Brunswick is the premier location in Melbourne (if not the world) for live music.

This week's Golden Parrot just goes to Brunswick. That's it.

Perico band members Richo and Col are off to the snow this weekend so we're going to miss all the music action - but we'll be thnking about it when we're having our apres-ski beers in a crappy yuppy bar with some guitarist and drum machine playing dodgy Bryan Adams' covers.

Perico in New XXX Video

Sorry, that was meant to be XXXX video, which the film maker was drinking when he took this footage of Perico at the Victoria Hotel in March. It was the last gig that Tim played with us before leaving for England.

You can see the video here or click on the link on the left of the page.

If you're having trouble viewing it, don't blame us, and more to the point, don't ask us about it because we don't know how these things work.

Glockenspielist in grubby break-up

Perico glockenspielist and well-known cava lier and ladies' man, Richo, is believed to have ended his brief but passionate relationship with the practice of his instrument.

"For a long time now, fingering has consumed me," he said, from his studio/boudoir, "I awaken in the dark of night with it, comforted by the abundance of tissues. I have found that in regards to rhythm the most successful attack is to throw one's whole body into it. It came to me, an epiphany, tangible, and moist, and then I knew: the glockenspiel was in fact a xylophone!!!!!"

Perico blog reporter, brunswick imbiber, and Italian soccer fan Damario Wildo was unimpressed.

"I'm unimpressed," said Damario. "I mean, come off it, or on it, whatever, I'm not touching anything he's touched before".

Exclusive: Perico Private Lives Revealed

Pericoloco blog can exclusively reveal intimate photos of what Brunswick superstars Perico get up to on Tuseday nights. The shocking and graphic photographs actually show the band rehearsing.

Perico blog reporter Damo Wilding was appalled.

"What sort of self-respecting rock and roll outfit actually practices? They should be doing drugs and hanging out with their groupies."

The photos can be seen here.

Perico to Write New Socceroos Song

Brunswick rockers Perico have been asked to write a new World Cup theme song in light of the Socceroos progression to the second round this morning.

Pin-up boy and guitarist Richo confirmed that the expression "We are Australians, in the stadiums" will not appear in the song, to be penned over the weekend.

Perico blog reporter, Brunswick drinker and Italian football fan, Damario Wildo, was scathing of the project, given his belief that the Australians will crash badly against the might of his favourite team.

"You wouldn't hear us Italians trying to make such dodgy rhymes as that, would you? If Perico write a song they should at least recognise that the plural of stadium is stadia."

St Albans Clash Welcomed by Perico

Tomorrow morning's "Battle of St Albans" between the Socceroos and Croatia has been warmly anticipated by Perico band members.
"I warmly anticipate this" said Perico stud Richo.
Perico blog reporter, Brunswick drinker and Croation soccer fan, Damoduka, also welcomed the match but admitted to being a bit confused.
"You see I'm really a huge Croatian fan" he said in faltering English at the Cornish Arms last night, having consumed nearly 12 pots.
"But which team has more Croations in it? And which team has more Australians? And where's that fiver you owe me? I'll have another pot, thanks."

Damo Faces Suspension Over Perico Rant

Perico blog reporter and Brunswick drinker, Damo Wilding, could face suspension from future Perico gigs, if he doesn't tone down his behaviour, according to Bass player, Greg. Greg was responding to an incoherent abusive rant that Damo made at perico's last gig in February.
"I mean, this really isn't the image we're trying to project. I like to think our fans are generally less abusive, cleaner looking, far more sober, more coherent and not fuckwits. Sorry to say this, but Damo is too often a complete jerk."
Damo, when asked for comment, seemed unconcerned.
"They've tried to ban me from everything before. But like a Jehova 's witness at your door, I'm just really hard to get rid of. No-one suspends Damo, NO-ONE!"

Perico Considers Bossa Nova

Melbourne supergroup, Perico, should be contemplating a shift to playing Bossa Nova, according to regular Brunswick drinker and Brazilian soccer fan, Damoldinho.

Damoldinho, speaking from Federation Square and decked out in gold for the first time this World Cup, was emphatic in his belief that "if you want something cool, try a Brazillion. My girlfriend did once, but she's not my girlfriend anymore because she ran off with a Brunswick tatooist who if I ever see hanging around Brunswick Medical Centre again, I'll kill him."
Band spokesperson, Drummer Col, claimed that "Perico could consider playing bossa nova or even samba given how versatile the band is. It's just that I know that Damo, or whatever he calls himself now, by Friday will be demanding we play Croation music - whatever that is."
Pictured is Damo with his current ideal band, Brazillian fusion samba-metal band, Black Samba.

Perico Spends Weekend on Fact-finding Mission

Perico members have spent the Queen's Birthday weekend on an intensive fact-finding mission, the Perico blog was told today. After a rather late practice on Friday night followed by a detailed planning session at the Retreat, Col was sent off to see Split Enz on Sunday night while Richo caught up with Belle and Sebastion.
"I've learned a lot" said a bleary-eyed but Socceroo-celebratring, Col on Tuesday morning, "and I'm sure Split Enz probably got something from this as well."
Brunswick saki drinker and Japanese soccer fan, Damoshi Wildingsaki, was scathing of the fact-finding mission, describing it as "a farce" and promising to "expose the corruption inherent in such activities".
Drummer Col shrugged off such suggestions as just bitterness.
"Naturally he's a bit upset about last night's result. He'll get over it."

Perico Nominated for Queen's Honours

Rumour was awash Sydney Road coffee shops this morning that Brunswick rockers Perico were favourites for this weekend's Queen's Honour.

The professor and Perico bass man Greg was non-plussed.

"It's not really about the awards or even the money, fame, chicks, drugs and all that." he said."It's about the music. So I won't even be watching the awards this weekend."

Guitarist and groom-to-be Richo said he'd heard all those rumours before.

"Every year it's the same thing. Rumours are spread that we've been nominated, the gossip is all over the tabloids and then...boom...we find it's all crap. So I'm not getting my hopes up. "

The annual award is struck in memory of Freddie Mercury from Queen, whose birthday we're celebrating this weekend. The award goes to the band with the best moustache. This year Drummer Col has been sporting a Chopper-like growth on his face that some people think might actually qualify, lending weight to the rumours. The Award will be announced on Monday.

Weekend in the Wick

What a huge Queen's birthday weekend of music in the Wick! Brunswick's premier gig guide "Pericoloco" has had a diificult time in choosing this weekend's Golden Parrot Award, primarily because of the huge number of gigs without even including Monday.

The Rock-a-thon at the Brunswick on Sunday is free and features five bands. We don't know them all but State-of-the-Union once graced the stage with Perico and we know they're certainly a seriously rocking unit.

It's very tempting to promote Richard Clapton who plays at the East on Saturday, except, as Damo says, how can you be interested in a guy whose name is "dick clapped on"?. Mind you Damo won't promote anything at the East at the moment as he's still smarting over events of a few weeks ago.

So, the Golden Parrot goes to Friday night's Retreat gig featuring Matt Walker and Ashley Davies. It'll be good.

Friday

ANYA LEE’S R+B’S The Lomond Hotel 9.30pm. Free.

No sale of Hydro Scheme Welcomed

Many people around Australia were celebrating over the weekend, following news that the Prime Minister wasn't going to sell the Snowy Hydro Scheme after all.

None more so than Perico blog reporter, regular Brunswick drinker and renowned local agriculturalist, Damo Wilding. Damo welcomed the news, but warned that "the cost of hydro is probably going to have to go up because of this decision."

Inside a packed front bar at the Retreat last night, Damo told Perico that "hydro is more potent and better value for money than stuff that's grown outdoors" and that he has "some of the best shit money can buy."

Perico Xylophonist Announces Marriage

In dramatic overnight news, Renaissance Man and Perico all-star musician Richard Oldfield announced his impending marriage.

Presenting a coy veneer, Richo announced in a press release that 1/ he was getting married 2/ that it would be on the "traditional" first Saturday of December 3/ that Perico would provide the music at the reception(eds note: DA!) and 4/ all he needed was a bride.

Ok, that's a challenge, but hardly insurmountable given his obvious sex appeal.

Drummer Col Offended By 'Grivelling Snub' comment

Perico drummer, Col "sex cymbal" Robertson, last night expressed his outrage at comments directed at him claiming he was a "grivelling snub".

"That type of language is totally uncalled for and inaccurate." he told the Perico Blog.

"People who say that sort of thing probably also dish out on Darryl Somers and Shannon Noll. It's totally unAustralian."

Brunswick drinker, Damo Wilding, was unrepentant about the comment.

"If I have offended anyone" he said "good, that was my intention.

Col was grateful nobody called him anything else such as a "snivelling grub:, for instance. Now THAT would be REALLY offensive, wouldn't it?
